Start a collecting passion that will stay with you-literally-by
buying vintage jewelry you can wear with style. "Vintage
jewelry collectors look for what was fashionable back in the 1930s,
'40s, and '50s," says antiques dealer Shana Gaines of Vintage to Vogue in
Newport, Rhode Island (401/845-2223; email: conversapc@aol.com).
"They like to wear something that makes them look unique."
Among the most sought-after vintage jewelry that Gaines sees right now are:
1930s-1950s Clamper Bracelets: These hinged bangle bracelets are
made of a base metal with electroplating; they sell for $35 and up if
unsigned, $200 and up if signed.
1940s Scarab Bracelets: Featuring different stones strung together
with a gold chain, scarab bracelets are a perennial favorite.
Vintage Bakelite Bracelets: Anything bakelite is popular, says
Gaines, who has a wonderful pair of bakelite bracelets made
from old mahjong game tiles. Bakelite bracelets range from $125 to $175
and up.
1950s Marilyn Monroe Bracelets: So named because the late actress often
wore rhinestones, these stretchy rhinestone bracelets sell for $65 and up.
