Make it
Sometimes made of Bakelite or basket material, Grandma’s favorite sewing kit can be turned on its side and filled with her vintage notions. Post a backdrop borrowed from one of the items, such as the graphic logo copied from a needle case in this sewing kit. (Copy and enlarge the needle case to get the graphic paper backdrop and use spray adhesive.) Then arrange some or all of the mementos (vintage sewing items, including a pin cushion, thimble, and measuring tape). (Use cool glue from a glue gun to attach the sewing notions to the Bakelite box.)
Matthew’s Secrets
If you didn't inherit a kit from your family, sewing notions are easy to find at flea markets and tag sales. Often they are fully outfitted with all types of accessories. If you need more or want to create a box as a gift, look for bags of thread, cards of snaps or buttons, and pearl-head pins or needles that often sell for only a few dollars. Add to your collection part and parcel with the addition of specialty scissors, vintage embroidery needles, hoops, etc.
