Celebrate Halloween’s shadowy side with pumpkins that showcase black-and-white images. Skip the hollowing-out phase of pumpkin carving and start by marking your design on the rind with a ballpoint pen. Using a light touch with your carving tool, remove just the orange part of the pumpkin wherever you want the white flesh to show. Two coats of black acrylic paint will disguise the remaining orange portions of the shell, creating a dramatic shadow effect.
Matthew’s Secrets
This technique works particularly well for intricate designs that would be too difficult to carve on a pumpkin that’s hollowed out the traditional way.
