Faster than the “Slow Lane”

Hi. I write the “Slow Lane” column in each monthly issue of Country Home magazine. And now I’m writing a blog that will appear every other week on www.countryhome.com.

So, let me introduce myself. I live on an acreage in Iowa with my husband, Doug, and sons, Tristan and Graham. (Actually, Tristan left for college in August, but most of his laundry—clean and dirty—is still littering the floor of his bedroom, so it’s sort of like he’s still living here).

We live in a farmhouse that was built in 1903—with only one closet. (What were they thinking?) The lack of closets, the one bathroom, and the tiny bedrooms all led to 23 years of remodeling projects both inside and out. I think the house is done now because there’s nowhere else to add on…or is there?

We share our lives with lots of pets. Three horses. Three donkeys. Eighteen sheep. Five dogs. Thirteen cats, including Claire, a dainty little tiger-striped cat who gave birth to 5 kittens, so make that 18 cats. We have doves in our garden aviary and a chicken house populated with laying hens. Our two tortoises (Maximus and Minimus, pets that Graham got when he was 8) will each eventually grow as large as a wheelbarrow—but not for 50 years…or so my son promised. And two canaries—one that sings like Pavarotti and one that makes awkward chirping sounds.

And we have four large gardens, a small orchard, and a huge koi pond (and the koi definitely have to be counted as pets because they are as personable and friendly as puppies).

You’ll meet them all, plus find out what else is happening at the farm and surrounding countryside throughout the seasons—every other week. I’ll hope you’ll tune in.

Claire’s kittens just opened their eyes and have started to wander about.

Snap, a Jack Russell terrier, is one of our five dogs.

I thoroughly enjoyed your, "Airstream Dreams" article in this month's Country Home Magazine. Airstreams have such vintage charm!
You can bet I will be checking back frequently as I can not wait to meet your whole animal family!

Hi Karen, I enjoyed reading the Slow Lane in the Nov. issue. I can relate to what you were going through in learning wheat weaving! I am learning this ancient craft too from a master weaver named Donna. She is a 65 year old Kansas farmgirl who has been weaving beautiful wheat creations for 30 years. I live on a small Kansas farm 5 miles from Donna. We met because she came to my door and asked if she could cut some of my ripening oats for a project...I was hooked on her and her craft. Now I am attempting to learn it...Love your column and farm and blog. My husband and daughters live on 20 acres and raise wheat, grape vineyard, Dexter heirloom cattle, 4 cats, and a frisky yellow lab named Max. I also grow antique roses and herbs and organic veggies. On occasion I have watched tornadoes form out my back door! Yikes! Life in the midwest can be stormy as you well know...I am an AVID Country Home devotee. Take care...Jenny

Hello Karen-
Country Home has been a part of my life for the last twenty years. (Wow, I can't believe I am admitting to that-but yes, it is true). Of the many things that I love about the magazine, my favorite is your column. I anxiously wait to read it each and every month. I am always inspired by your thoughts. I guess that is what an article should do, provoke us to think, be inspiration and create. Thank you for sharing so much of your life and self. We share many of the same attitudes, and interests. A fan in Cape May, NJ.

Look foreword to reading more about yours.

Hi Karen,
I really look forward to your columns, However I would appreciate it if you would speak to your editors about making it much longer.
I had to laugh out loud over your Tracking Movements and your "cozy" barn cats with their comforters and heat lamps. I had to find new homes for my outside cats when they refused to be locked up in the pump house at night anymore. Our barn does not have electricity and we have a lot of predators in our area of central Texas. We have donkeys too. Our latest addition - a little jenny born on Thanksgiving Day - brings our total to eleven. Regards,

Hey Karen,
I, like the others, read your column first before any of the others. I don't live on a farm, but sure wish I did. My husband says we need to because of all the animals I adopt, which are really cats that are adopting me. I just wish I could adopt more!!! I love hearing about your pets and seeing the pictures. Can't wait for more.
