Shuttling between Miami and New York yields plenty of antiquing (and arts) in January and February—and a chance to catch some sunshine too.
Dec. 6-9, Miami: Art Basel Miami (artbasel.com). With exhibits set in Miami’s Art Deco district, this international art show offers a lure to the art lover and antiques collector all in one hip cultural scene. More than 200 leading art galleries from North and South America will mount exhibitions. But Art Basel is more than the sum of its exhibits: It is a cultural happening with an art, architecture, and design sensibility. It’s also a party scene, as attendees spill into the buzzing nightlife along South Beach’s many restaurants and boutique hotels. Between the Art Basel events, stroll Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, for the vintage jewelry, clothing, and antiques shops.
Jan. 17-20, New York City: The American Antiques Show (theamericanantiquesshow.org). A benefit for the American Folk Art Museum (folkartmuseum.org), this show features 45 top dealers in folk art and American antiques, and is held in the Metropolitan Pavilion, at 125 West 18th Street, in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood. (The museum itself is located about 30 blocks north, in the Rockefeller Center area; museum address is 45 West 53rd Street, and a free shuttle bus will run between the show and the museum.) Dealers at the show will display all the captivating icons of American antiques: 19th century portraits, furniture, needlework, decoys, weathervanes, quilts, hooked rugs, pewter, and more.
