The Santa Monica Antique and Collectible Market features higher-end antiques, making it a fun contrast to the Melrose Trading Post, which features well-priced junk. Melrose is run by students of Fairfax (public) High School to raise money for things such as sports uniforms and computers. Vintage clothing is big here, as is metal outdoor furniture. Melrose can be chaotic, so plan to arrive early.
At Santa Monica, we found terrific selections of mid-century furniture and textiles. If you have to choose, hit the show at the end of the month; it’s the biggest, with 180 vendors and early-bird admission.
The Santa Monica Antique & Collectible Market is held the first and fourth Sunday of each month at the Santa Monica Airport, across from the Barker Hanger. The month’s first market runs 8 a.m.–3 p.m.; admission $4. The month’s last market is 8 a.m.–3 p.m. with $5 admission; early admission, 6 a.m.–8 a.m., is $7. 323/933-2511.
Melrose Trading Post is held every Sunday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., in the parking lot at Fairfax High School, 7850 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles; admission $2. 323/655-8291; greenwayarts.org. |
