Top 10 Collectibles for 2005
6. collecting natural history

Centuries ago, aristocrats collected scarabs as a sign of their education and travel. Victorians collected everything from coral to butterflies. Mother Nature is a category we’re instinctively drawn to, says New York dealer Marion Harris. “Everyone has a collection of shells or twigs,” she says. Specifically look for items with a story, such as antique English egg collections from the early 1900s that include documentation on how and where each specimen was found. These art collectibles not only decorate your home but they are great for educating those you love about the natural history of the area.

Prices: Up to $5,000. (Free if you find it!)

Dealer’s tip: Knowing your source and having documentation is critical; many objects are protected or have import issues. Coveted items include oddities, such as these cast resin mushrooms ($75 each) that were made for a Hermès Paris display window in the 1940s.
