Why they’re hot: Currier and Ives were New York printmakers in the mid-19th century. Their prints are nostalgic pictorial records of American life.
Hint: “About three quarters of prints are reproductions,” says New York City dealer Harry Newman. To tell if it’s fake, look for tiny, uniform dots-those are red flags.
Cost: Subject matter usually determines price. A small folio-size depiction of a girl with fruit might be $175, while a large folio-size baseball scene could be $100,000.
Display: Preservation is key: Don’t mount or glue; use acid-free rag stock board; and place your Currier and Ives print behind UV glass.
