| Velvet requires stitching it right the first time; ripping out seams can mar the pile. Stitch a sample seam to test the machine settings and practice stopping, with the needle down, and raising the presser foot every few inches to let the fabric shift back in place. For slipcovers and upholstery, the pile needs to run in the same direction, down from the ceiling. To determine the pile’s direction, stroke the fabric—you’ll feel resistance when brushing against the pile—or drape the fabric over your shoulder in a mirror to see which way the nap falls. Mark the top with a pin. For durability, velvet should always be cut vertically, not on the crosswise grain. |
