A covered porch should be cozy enough to use year-round, and comfortable enough to fall asleep in.
Vic Spelman and Emily Milstein’s porch shows how cozy a covered porch can feel. Check out these decorative porch tips for autumn.
TRY ANYTHING
The three-season porch located just off the dining room is Vic and Emily’s eatery of choice during the warm months. Vic made the sofa and Emily lined it with solid-colored cushions and pillows—showing just how cozy a covered porch can be.
BRING IT OUTSIDE
Get some furniture from inside that's fairly durable, and marvel at the new coziness of your porch. Then add plastic end tables, or a waterproof coffee table, for intimate porch parties and outdoor get-togethers.
SOFTEN UP
To give your porch decorative color and warmth, introduce textiles, such as vintage tablecloths or linens, quilts, tea towels, and throws. For a measure of protection, you can treat fabrics with a water-repellent spray, available at fabric stores.
BE SMART
No-fuss weather-resistant fabrics can be found on ready-made items. To make your own cushions, choose weather-resistant fabrics that are soft and supple-ideal for large loosely filled pillows that you can slump on a swing or a chair. Weather-resistant trims are also available.
ADD SOME GREEN
Potted plants add life to a porch with their decorative touch. Make them into pieces of art by using unique flowerpots accentuated with your favorite plants. Tip: Try to pick some plants that grow year-round, such as fall-blooming toad lilies, to make your porch lively even when your garden isn't.
