Open-Bracket Shelf
Here’s how to build an open-bracket shelf like the one Senior Building/Design Editor Meredith Ladik used in her laundry room, featured in the October 2006 issue of Country Home magazine.
For each bracket, cut a 36-inch-long 2x2 to these lengths: 9 1/2 inches for vertical back piece, 10 inches for horizontal top piece, and 11 inches for diagonal piece. Using a miter box and saw, cut a 45-degree angle into each end of the 11-inch-long diagonal strip.
To assemble brackets, position pieces in a triangular shape, placing the diagonal 2 inches up from the bottom edge of the back piece. Screw pieces together with a drill. Repeat steps for additional brackets.

For the shelf top, cut a 1x12 board to 24 inches long. (A longer shelf may not support heavy china.) Line up brackets against shelf; drill screws through top.

Secure the shelf to the wall using hardware made for that purpose. There are a variety of products you can use, depending on your installation situation. Ask for advice at your local hardware store or home center.
