Appliances in tuck-away drawers (refrigerator, freezer, and dishwasher all in stainless steel by KitchenAid) keep the space looking sleek. Mixing instead of matching cabinetry also lightens up the look, as do the multiple units of open shelving. For upper cabinets, we chose Vetro aluminum doors and combined them with opaque glass inserts (better for keeping clutter out of sight). For the base cabinets, we chose KraftMaid in a soft maple finish and configured them in a combination of drawers and doors—using spacers to achieve the curved look. We specified half-round pulls to pick up the industrial look of the appliances. Instead of using one solid surface for countertops, we chose two: DuPont Corian solid surface for the perimeter and DuPont Zodiaq hard-as-a-rock quartz for the work island.
