Give a personalized ornament as a gift and use it as a placeholder, too. Apply the guest’s monogram using sticky decals (from the scrapbooking aisle of the crafts store) on plain ornaments. Finish off with a ribbon and present it in a shallow footed dish or saltcellar atop the place setting.
