Faux Marble Painting Technique |
| |
We recommend practicing this technique to get the hang of it before you tackle your final project.
Table top marble painting
Directions for achieving a marbleized effect on a wall shelf.
Lightly sand and prime the larger piece of MDF twice. Apply one coat of satin water base polyurethane. Allow it to dry and cure.
To achieve the faux marble effect, make a light color of gray using some of the primer and black acrylic paint. Spread some of the gray paint across a piece of poster board or other non porous surface.
Bunch the ends of a plastic grocery bag and pull it taught. Lay the bag on top of the paint and press it into the paint. While keeping it fairly taught, lift the bag, then lightly lay it across the larger piece of MDF. Press it onto the MDF.
Repeat this process across the surface of the MDF.
You may want to try this a few times to determine the best consistency of paint and the correct amount of pressure to approximate the look of the veining. If you don’t like it, wipe it off with a damp rag and try again.
Allow the paint to dry thoroughly. Apply a coat of polyurethane. Sand very lightly with extra fine sandpaper, then apply a second coat of polyurethane.
