An unfinished farm table and a chain-link gate team up to create a custom potting bench.

Shopgirl Leslie Segrete builds a handy potting bench.

1. Assemble the table. Prime and then paint it and the galvanized gate.

2. Match the center of the gate to the tabletop; mark the center of each gate post 1 1/2 inches from the table’s back edge. Using a 1 3/8-inch Forstner bit, drill holes the depth of the bit. Place posts in holes.

3. Attach four evenly spaced 1 1/4-inch pipe clamps to the gate’s bottom bar; screw clamps to the tabletop. On the gate front, hammer large staples around the chain link and into the tabletop.

4. Hang tools from the gate using wire or S-hooks.
