Not far from the corn dogs and funnel cakes for sale on the midway at the Iowa State Fair is an entirely different kind of fair food: the competitive cooking contests. Country Home sponsors the Garden-Fresh or Organic contest, and a few lucky members of our staff get to serve as judges. Last year, Suellen Calhoun won first prize—a Bosch 30-inch stainless-steel convection range—with her Garden-Fresh Chicken and Corn Fritters with Chile Corn Puree. Second prize, a VillaWare Uno ProPress Panini Grill, went to Dianna Sheehy for her “North 40” Berry Pie. And Eileen Gannon won third prize for her Rabbit Pot Pie with Herb Pastry Crust. She took home an Oster Beehive Blender and a Blend-N-Go cup. All three cooks are advocates of fresh, organic, locally grown ingredients. “It just tastes so good,” Dianna says. We agree. Try all of the winning dishes using the recipes below.
